Frequent Uses

Lugols Solution Production

Potassium Iodide is a key ingredient in Lugol’s Iodine Solution, used extensively in applications such as gram staining and gold surface etching.

Photography and Film Processing

In Photography it is sometimes used as a stabiliser, aiding in the development and preservation of photographic images.

Sandmeyer Reactions

The Sandmeyer reaction uses Potassium Iodide to convert aromatic amines into aryl iodides by substituting a diazonium salt intermediate with iodine, making it an essential method for introducing iodine onto aromatic rings in synthetic organic chemistry.

Strong Reducing Agent

Combined with an acid, Potassium Iodide generates Hydroiodic Acid (HI), a strong reducing agent widely used in synthetic reactions to reduce organic compounds.

Starch Indicator in Chemical Testing

When combined with starch, Potassium Iodide is used as an indicator. The iodine-starch complex it forms is highly visible as a deep blue or purple, helping to signal the end point in redox titrations.

Conforms to BP, EP, USP grade

The major uses of KI include use as a nutritional supplement in animal feeds and also the human diet.
