What is Calcium Carbide? It is a chemical compound with the chemical formula of CaC2. The pure material is colourless, while pieces of technical-grade calcium carbide are grey or brown and consist of about 80–85% of CaC2 (the rest is CaO (calcium oxide), Ca3P2 (calcium phosphide), CaS (calcium sulfide), Ca3N2 (calcium nitride), SiC (silicon carbide), etc.). In the presence of trace moisture, technical-grade calcium carbide emits an unpleasant odour reminiscent of garlic.
Shipped from Manchester, UK Facility: Our Calcium Carbide is sourced and packaged using non-toxic, chemical-resistant containers, ensuring reliable quality for our customers.
Frequent Uses
Chemical Synthesis
A precursor in the production of various organic compounds, including synthetic rubber and plastics.
Steelmaking and Desulphurisation
Used in steel manufacturing to remove sulphur and other impurities, improving the quality of the final product.
Moisture Testing
It can be used to determine the moisture content of soil. When mixed with a soil sample in a closed container, it reacts with water to release acetylene gas.
Production of acetylene
Production of calcium cyanamide
