What is Acetic Anhydride? Acetic Anhydride (chemical formula C₄H₆O₃) is a colourless, strongly reactive liquid widely used as an acetylating agent in industrial and laboratory settings. Known for its characteristic pungent odour, it is essential in the production of acetyl derivatives, making it a key chemical in various manufacturing processes.
Consistent Quality: We provide only high-quality Acetic Anhydride 98% ensuring reliable and consistent performance for all applications.
Shipped from Manchester, UK Facility: Sourced and bottled in non-toxic, chemical-resistant containers to ensure safe handling and preserve product quality during transport.
Glass Winchester Bottle: Available in 100ml, 500ml, 1L and 2.5L pack sizes. Our Glass Winchester bottles can store chemicals that may be sensitive to light due to filtering potentially harmful UV rays. Bottles are durable, versatile and perfect for storing products in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
Chemical synthesis
Primarily used as a versatile reagent for acetylations, the introduction of acetyl groups to organic substrates. In these conversions, acetic anhydride is viewed as a source of CH3CO+.
Polymer production
Some of these acetylation reactions involving Acetic Anhydride produce acetates which are then used as precursors for polymerisation in the manufacturing process of plastics, films/coatings and other high demand polymers.
Pharmaceutical
Utilised in the production of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), which is prepared by the acetylation of salicylic acid.
Wood treatment
In the lumber idustry, experimentation with acetylation reactions with lumber have suggested an extension to the lifespan and quality of the wood which could have an important impact on research into renewable materials.
