About Volumetrics

A Volumetric solution is defined as a solution that contains a specific quantity of solute (chemical/compound) per stated unit of solvent (often water).

This is usually given in moles per litre or molarity (M).

They are essential for Volumetrics analysis, most commonly in titration (manual or automatic) where knowing the exact concentration is crucial.

Manufacturing & Quality Control

Atom only sources high-quality raw materials from known and approved suppliers.

All manufacturing is carried out under strict manufacturing protocols using high purity 18MΩ-cm resistivity water. This ensures minimum levels of non-analytes.

Prior to release for sale, each batch is tested in our in-house Chemistry QC Laboratory and a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis is created.

A sample of each batch is retained under appropriate storage conditions for the shelf life of the product.

Testing Regime

Case study of VM1009 Hydrochloric Acid 0.1M (0.1N)

This typical volumetric will undergo QC testing multiple times from the arrival:

  • All raw materials/concentrates are checked for strength on receipt
  • All supplier batch C of A’s are checked and verified to our specification
  • Water Quality is monitored daily and independently tested monthly
  • Testing at point of manufacture

All testing is carried out following the principles laid down in ISO 17034:2016(E).

The Certificate of Analysis for this product will show:

  • Tested concentration
  • Error value (variation)
  • Batch Number
  • Date of Manufacture
  • Expiry Date

This follows the principles laid out in ISO GUIDE 31:2015

The concentration is measured by auto-titration to ensure the best accuracy possible.

The auto-titrator is computer-controlled and capable of measuring changes far smaller than traditional manual titration and so is capable of very consistent and accurate results.

Error Values

Sometimes the Technical Team get asked about values quoted on certificates of analysis.

Whilst all measurements carry some form of error (sometimes called resolution), we only use equipment that has a very high resolution which means it can measure very small values.

When several pieces of equipment are used the errors for every piece have to be calculated and used to produce the overall error or variation for a measurement (Atom follows the principles of JCGM 100:2008 Evaluation of measurement data).

Traceable to NIST volumetric range

Atom Scientific is currently developing a range of NIST traceable acid-base titration volumetrics.

These premium solutions will offer enhanced quality control via extensive error reporting and knowledge that all quoted values have NIST traceability
