Dichloromethane, also known as DCM or methylene chloride, is a geminal organic compound with the chemical formula CH2Cl2. It is a colourless, volatile liquid with a moderately sweet aroma and is widely used as a solvent. Although not miscible with water, it is polar and is miscible with many organic solvents.

  • Widely used as a solvent in peptide synthesis, a process used to create peptides by chemically joining amino acids together in a specific order.

  • Good solvent for dissolving many reagents, including amino acids and coupling reagents.

  • Excellent solvent for the deprotection of amino acid side chains, which is a crucial step in peptide synthesis.

  • High volatility ensures that it evaporates quickly, leaving behind the synthesized peptide.

  • Highly purified and free of impurities that may interfere with peptide synthesis reactions.

  • Available in different grades, including synthesis grade and peptide synthesis grade, each with different levels of purity and suitability for different applications.

  • Widely used as a solvent in other organic chemistry applications due to its high purity and low boiling point.

  • Also used as a solvent for recrystallization and extraction of organic compounds.

  • Used as a degreasing agent and paint stripper in industrial applications.

  • Also used as a blowing agent in the production of polyurethane foams.
