Tetrachloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene or "perc", is a colourless, non-flammable, volatile liquid with a characteristic sweet odour. It is a chlorinated hydrocarbon commonly used as a solvent in dry cleaning and metal degreasing processes. Tetrachloroethylene is also used in the production of other chemicals, such as refrigerants, as well as in the manufacture of rubber coatings and other products.
Tetrachloroethylene is a highly stable and persistent chemical that can persist in the environment for long periods of time. It is classified as a probable human carcinogen and exposure to high levels of tetrachloroethylene can cause a range of health effects, including liver and kidney damage, as well as neurological effects such as dizziness and headaches. Chronic exposure to low levels of tetrachloroethylene has also been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, such as bladder cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Due to its potential health risks, the use of tetrachloroethylene is regulated in many countries, and efforts are being made to phase out its use in certain applications. Alternatives to tetrachloroethylene, such as wet cleaning technologies and less hazardous solvents, are being developed and implemented to reduce exposure and promote safer practices in industries that use this chemical.
