Gill formulations of haematoxylin come in 3 strengths, all formulated to be used progressively.
Gill I and Gill II are generally recommended for cytology due to the lower haematoxylin content whilst Gill III is recommended for histology.
Gill II is also an ideal counterstain for immunohistochemistry.
The lower haematoxylin contect allows for a more controlled staining of chromatin.
