What to Consider when Ordering Lab Chemicals

Whether you have years of inventory experience or are just getting started, understanding the critical factors when you buy chemicals can help you make the best choices for your needs. Atom Scientific manufactures a range of high-quality chemicals and is committed to helping you navigate the complexities of chemical procurement. Here are some essential considerations to keep in mind when ordering chemicals.

1. Purpose and application

Before you buy chemicals, clearly define the purpose and application of the chemicals you need. Are they for research, manufacturing, or educational purposes? Understanding the specific use will help you select the appropriate grade and type of chemical, ensuring optimal performance and safety.

Whilst this seems self-evident, it forces you to be more discerning. Are you trying something experimental which might require an alternative synthesis or solution? Is it best to plan for all eventualities?

2. Quality and purity

The quality and purity of chemicals are paramount. Depending on your application, you may require chemicals of varying purity levels. For instance, laboratory-grade chemicals are suitable for most research purposes, whilst analytical-grade chemicals are necessary for high-precision work.

3. Safety and handling

Safety should always be a top priority when ordering lab chemicals. Familiarise yourself with each chemical's safety data sheets (SDS), which provide essential information on handling, storage, and potential hazards. Ensure your facility has the safety equipment and protocols to handle the lab chemicals safely.

4. Regulatory compliance

Compliance with local, national, and international regulations is essential when you buy chemicals. Ensure you know any permits or licences required for the lab chemicals you intend to purchase.

There are very real consequences for falling outside of compliance, both the financial ramifications and potential hazards to lab mates who could encounter chemicals outside the lab’s remit.

5. Supplier reliability

Choosing a reliable supplier is critical to ensuring the quality and consistency of your lab chemical supply. Look for suppliers with a proven track record, positive customer reviews, and robust quality control processes.

Atom Scientific prides itself on delivering high-quality lab chemicals and exceptional customer service - Check out our range here.

6. Cost and budget

Whilst cost should not be the sole determining factor, it is essential to consider your budget when ordering lab chemicals. Compare prices from different suppliers and consider the products' quality, purity, and reliability. Investing in high-quality chemicals can save you money in the long run by reducing waste and improving efficiency.

We offer quantity-based discounts. This means you can get all your lab chemicals in one place and at a competitive price instead of sourcing chemicals from individual suppliers at a more expensive price, saving you time and money. Another win? We don’t have a small order charge or a minimum order value, allowing you to get only what you need instead of spending your budget on unnecessary items.

7. Environmental impactBiofil Biodegradable loosefill - environmentally friendly

Consider the environmental impact of the lab chemicals you are ordering. Look for suppliers that prioritise sustainability and offer eco-friendly options. Proper chemical disposal is also crucial to minimise ecological harm.

Atom Scientific is committed to sustainable practices and guides responsible chemical disposal. How do we achieve this?

We reduce waste through reuse and recycling. Over the last 18 months, we have made consistent and regular changes to reduce our carbon footprint.

Starting with our packaging, we invested in a cardboard shredder to recycle all of our internally generated waste into packaging material. Before this change our operations were consuming 80-100 bags of polystyrene packaging per month - we have now reduced our consumption to less than 20 bags per month.

We have also switched to an eco-friendly version of polystyrene for more specialist packaging: Flopak is made from recycled polystyrene and allows us to use less material, significantly cutting down on our packaging waste. Plus, Flopak provides higher protection for our products, reducing the risk of damage during transit.

All of these packaging changes have significantly reduced the waste produced on-site and removed 80% of polystyrene beads from our operation. This is a great step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability as we continue to work on multiple areas of our business with the goal of making a positive impact on the environment.

Beyond these waste management initiatives, we’re also reducing electricity use across our administrative facilities.

8. Delivery and lead times

Ensure that the supplier can meet your delivery requirements and lead times. Delays in chemical supply can disrupt your operations and research.
