N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a colourless, high-boiling point, polar aprotic solvent that is commonly used as a molecular sieve in various applications. It has the chemical formula C3H7NO and is known for its solubility power for a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds.

In molecular sieve applications, DMF is used as a solvent and a pore-forming agent in the production of zeolite and other porous materials. These materials are used in a variety of industrial processes, such as gas separation, catalysis, and water treatment, where their porous structure allows them to selectively adsorb or exclude molecules based on their size and shape.

DMF is also used in the preparation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous materials that are composed of metal ions or clusters linked by organic ligands. DMF serves as a solvent in the synthesis of MOFs, and can also act as a template, helping to control the size and shape of the resulting crystals.

While DMF is an effective molecular sieve agent, it should be handled with care due to its toxic and flammable nature. Prolonged exposure to DMF can lead to respiratory, skin, and eye irritation, and it should only be used in a well-ventilated laboratory with appropriate personal protective equipment.
