Nitric acid is a highly corrosive mineral acid with the chemical formula HNO3. The pure compound is colourless, but older samples tend to have a yellow colour due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water.

Applications

• Used in the production of fertilizers
• Used as an oxidant in the production of nylon
• In a low concentration (approximately 10%), nitric acid is often used to artificially age pine and maple
