A warm welcome to our Health, Safety and Compliance Manager Rob Bryson. To welcome Rob our Marketing Co-Ordinator Amy sat down and had a meeting with him to discuss his goals and intentions in his new role. Rob is a very intriguing and motivated individual and Amy enjoyed getting to know Rob’s work ethics further, he is a positive addition to the company.
A meeting with Rob Bryson
I joined the British Army, Logistic Corp in 1987 and during my 16 year’s service, I gained skills and knowledge that help to shape my career. My experience has enabled me to utilise work in challenging (and rewarding) roles, supporting NATO and the United Nations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, West and Central Africa. I have worked in remote locations (South Sudan, Uganda) doing roles from working in transport, being a company driver, training to be a trainer, and warehouse operations manager. Finally settling on a career that combines quality, health, safety and environment (QHSE).
I have always liked to continually develop myself and develop others. I am currently working towards my NCRQ Level 6 Diploma in Applied Health and Safety and HABC level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.
I like to get stuck in and work as a team. I am a people person and I like to engage with people, understanding how the world looks like from their perspective. This way I can learn from them whilst supporting their development through mentoring, coaching and overall creating a culture of safe working. And I know that one of the best ways to do this is to be a good role model myself.
My Day to day responsibilities at Atom are:
Following the recent successful ISO9001 2019 audit, my main focus over the next 12 months will be to merge our existing Quality Management System with our Existing Health & Safety System to create a single new and improved system fit for the next stage of the company’s planned growth.
My plan to get there is to:
Get to know Atom, our culture and how we do things around here as well as getting to know the individuals and teams.
Review existing systems and make recommendations on the best method of merging to create a new and combined system.
As we hope our new larger facility will be agreed in the near future. I will have a great opportunity to undertake a complete review of our existing risk assessments and create an implementation plan for the new Health and Safety quality system, which incorporates our values, safety training with input from all the teams.
To attain the ISO4501-2015 certification (health and safety certification) by 2020.
In the meantime, I will be developing and delivering a programme of Toolbox talks, delivered over a 13 week period to raise awareness of different aspects of health and safety. reinforcing one of our core value of Atom being a great place to work, but equally importantly a Safe place to work.
I think one of my biggest challenges will be managing change to a new system and bringing our Team along for the journey with me. Not everyone likes change and it can be difficult to introduce new practise when everyone is used to the existing system.
However, I have already seen some positive signs and people are starting to see the benefit of change, and how my role within the business is there to support them in the future. So, by taking small steps and showing the benefits new ways of working brings, we will be able to make progressive changes for the better, allowing the business to grow in line with the management plans.
And finally, I think it’s worth saying why I like working for Atom. The team are great, both in the warehouse and in the office. The work is challenging and gets my brain working. And I know that the work we do here makes a difference.
